Toronto YPs Donate Over $500 in Support of the AGBU Zaroukian School.

The Young Professionals of Toronto (YPTO) ensured that no one missed out on Friday, May 13th, 2011 as YPs from across the city gathered at Toronto’s newest champagne bar and lounge FOMO: Fear of Missing Out.  Over 90 YPs attended the fundraiser in support of the AGBU Zaroukian School, and enjoyed the sounds of DJ Saro and Som Bomb DJ.

The event raised over $500 for the AGBU Zaroukian School which will help support enhancements to the science program

“We are extremely appreciative of the support we have received from YPTO, says Lena Sarkissian of the Zaroukian School Board.” She continues, “Recognizing the importance the AGBU Zaroukian School has placed on sciences and recognizing that half the tuition of each student is subsidized by AGBU, YPTO took the initiative to raise funds to support this new undertaking.”

A special thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success, and to everyone who supports YPTO’s commitment to fundraising projects in Armenia and within the Toronto Armenian community. This past year, YPTO has actively fundraised for several projects in Armenia including the AGBU Children’s Centres, and the Pan YP Environmental Project. YPTO looks forward to continuing its support of the Zaroukian School, and special student projects.

The AGBU Young Professionals of Toronto (YPTO), a volunteer-run organization, has been offering Armenian young professionals a diverse calendar of events since 2006.  YPTO is dedicated to bringing together like-minded young professionals, and offering resources to help promote talent, self-development, and personal and professional success. From workshops on real estate and finance, to seminars on resume writing and business etiquette, to Armenian cooking lessons and fundraising parties, YPTO offers something for everyone.

Over 100 Attend Raymond Kevorkian’s Inaugural Stop on his North American Book Tour

On Tuesday, May 3, French-Armenian historian Raymond Kevorkian began his North American book tour in the city of Toronto for his newly translated The Armenian Genocide: A Complete History.

Over a hundred people attended the event at the AGBU Toronto center, to hear Kevorkian, who is the director of the AGBU Nubarian Library in Paris and a lecturer at the Institute Français de Géopolitique, University of Paris, discuss his seminal study.

In his 1,000-page book, Kevorkian considers the role the Armenian Genocide played in the construction of the Turkish nation state and Turkish identity, and explores the ideologies of power, rule, and state violence. He also examines the consequences of the violence against the Armenians, the implications of the deportations, and the attempts to bring those who committed the atrocities to justice.

The book is the first to make extensive use of the archives of the AGBU Nubarian Library, which has an important collection of papers, documents, and photographs related to the Armenian Genocide.
